HERSHEY'S "Especially Dark" Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup HERSHEY'S SPECIAL DARK Cocoa
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • "ESPECIALLY DARK" CHOCOLATE FROSTING

Directions

  • 1. Heat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans or line 28 to 30 muffin cups (2-1/2 inches in diameter) with paper bake cups.
  • 2. Stir together sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt in large bowl. Add eggs, milk, oil and vanilla; beat on medium speed of mixer 2 minutes. Stir in boiling water (batter will be thin). Pour batter into prepared pans or fill cups about 2/3 full with batter.
  • 3. Bake 30 to 35 minutes for round pans or 22 to 25 minutes for cupcakes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans to wire racks. Cool completely. Frost with "ESPECIALLY DARK" CHOCOLATE FROSTING. Makes 12 servings or 30 cupcakes.
  • "ESPECIALLY DARK" CHOCOLATE FROSTING
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine
  • 2/3 cup HERSHEY'S SPECIAL DARK Cocoa
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Melt butter, Stir in cocoa. Alternately add powdered sugar and milk, beating to spreading consistency. Add small amount additional milk, if needed. Stir in vanilla. About 2 cups frosting.

    I came upon this recipe a few years ago. I won't make any other chocolate cake. It is moist, rich and delicious! Many family members have requested that I make this cake for gatherings. In fact, I made it today for my niece who just turned 29. I was curious to see if you had a cupcake version and was soooo happy to find that info on this page. Thanks Hershey!

    Fantastic! I made this with the frosting too. Both appeared runny but turned out superb. I will be making this again and again. Maybe a Bundtpan next time though.
    By far the greatest chocolate cake ever! Note to next baker... Even with muffin liners, spray the pan. I was bummed that I over filled and they stuck super badly!! (Clean up tasted heavenly ;) ).

    This recipe is delicious. I do make it a bit healthier by using egg substitute, Domino Light Stevia/Sugar Blend, skim milk ,and white whole wheat flour. I also used 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce and just 1/4 cup oil. The cake turned out great and I used some Smart Balance spread instead of butter for the frosting. This recipe is much better than anything you could get from a box and a can of frosting. Plus, there's no trans fats.
    I'm a snob when it comes to food...but it can't get any better than this.
    This is my favorite chocolate cake! I have been baking since I was about 13 years old, so I've baked a lot of cakes. Box mix, homemade...lots of different recipes. I don't think I need to try to find a better chocolate cake recipe than this. All others that say they are the best just aren't. This one is.

    My family and I make cakes using Hershey's Dark Chocolate and have even used the regular Chocolate. They are always good and my children and I fight over how much they can eat. Very moist and tasty.

    Very few recipes make a "5" but this one deserves it. It's a rich chocolate--you only need a slim slice. I'll be baking it for special occasions for the chocolate lovers in my life.
    This is the best chocolate cake that I have made hands down. It was very very moist!! I added raspberry extract to the cake mix and frosting. It was fantastic. It is a keeper!

    WOW!! . . . I am the worlds' most addicted chocoholic and have never had a more satisfying chocolate cake than this. I also made the frosting which was pure heaven for me. I will remember this recipe forever and make it often and when I want to truly impress the world with my baking prowess -- which I really don't have. :-)

    My grandma makes this cake and my whole family loves it every time. I printed out this recipe one time to make with her and then realized this was the cake she always made this whole time. I totally recomend it!!!!
    This recipe is fantastically delicious and the only one I use when chocolate cake is needed. Only thing is that I top it with either a 7 minute frosting or with whipped cream and raspberries. The cake's genius is that it is dark and not too sweet. If you use a sweet frosting or icing, you defeat the purpose. Just a light dusting of cocoa powder or powdered sugar is also fine for purists or us lazy people!

    I love baking this recipe, it's moist and the dark chocolate is PERFECT! You can use chocolate mousse as filling and any type of frosting you can think of. I eat this with strawberry fruit...yum yum!

    Whenever my family ask me to bake a cake, it is this cake. It is a non-fail cake, excellent in texure and taste. I also enjoy baking it. Using the finest ingre. I bake it in a 9 x 12 pan, sheet cake. I also add pecans to the frosting for a Texas taste.
    This recipe is similar to Hershey's Black Magic Cake which is to DIE for. I am looking forward to using the chocolate frosting recipe on that.
    My family loved this recipe. One of my sons said it was like having a Hershey bar melt in your mouth. This cake is very moist. I took it to school and it was gone before lunch!
