Chocolate cake complete with three moist layers and coconut-pecan frosting.
1/4 cup HERSHEY'S Cocoa
1/2 cup boiling water
1 cup plus 3 tablespoons butter or margarine
2-1/4 cups sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk or sour milk
COCONUT PECAN FROSTING
1. Heat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour three 9-inch round baking pans.
2. Stir together cocoa and water in small bowl until smooth; set aside. Beat butter, sugar and vanilla in large bowl until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir together flour, baking soda and salt; add to butter mixture alternately with chocolate mixture and buttermilk, beating just enough to blend. Pour batter into prepared pans.
3. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until top springs back when touched lightly. Cool 5 minutes; remove from pans to wire racks. Cool completely. Prepare COCONUT PECAN FROSTING; spread between layers and over top. Makes 12 servings.
* To sour milk: Use 1 tablespoon white vinegar plus milk to equal 1 cup.
COCONUT PECAN FROSTING
1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated milk)
3 egg yolks, slightly beaten
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1-1/3 cups MOUNDS Sweetened Coconut Flakes
1 cup chopped pecans
Stir together sweetened condensed milk, egg yolks and butter in medium saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture is thickened and bubbly. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla, coconut and pecans. Cool to room temperature. About 2-2/3 cups frosting.
I made this for a friend's daughter's birthday and they liked it. I will use this again.
I made this for my husband's birthday because it's his favorite cake. I followed the recipe exact except I doubled the icing recipe which I'm glad I did, and replaced the water for coffee as someone recommend. This was the BEST German chocolate cake I have EVER tasted!
I baked this cake for my husband's birthday (his fave). This cake was wonderful in flavor and easy to make!! I've been baking for years, but I couldn't stop smiling when the cakes slid out of the pans so easily without sticking. I was so proud :-). I cut off the crusty edges and they tasted soooo good! I almost considered leaving them on. I cooked the cake for exactly 25 minutes and it was perfectly moist and fluffy. I also added coffee as a substitute for the boiling water. I was concerned about an over-powering coffee taste, but it doesn't taste like coffee at all, just chocolate richness. This recipe is definitely a keeper. My humble opinion is that anyone who has negative results with this easy recipe, did not follow the instructions correctly. Some advice I would give: 1. do not overfill pans- 2/3 - 3/4 full. 2. position oven rack directly in the center of the oven. Happy Baking!! ;-)
Everyone Loved this recipe.
Followed directions exactly and the cake came out flat and heavy. Very disappointing.
We made cupcakes and they were the best I've ever eaten. Moist inside, crispy on top and the frosting was wonderful. Wicked Awesome!!!
Made this recipe for the first time and it was a huge hit!
I wish I had known about this recipe many years ago. Love the fact you don't have to separate the eggs
except for the frosting. So simple.
awesome cake and icing. My husbands favorite
I made this for my husbands birthday, after 18 years of him asking for a German Choc cake (I don't like it myself), I finally made this one. I made a few errors while baking, and it looked a bit messy when I finished, but everyone that tried it loved it! Very moist and rich, they said. All of the Hershey recipes I have tried have been no-brainers and turned out great for me!
My favorite cake I have made over 45 years. No box stuff can come near it.
This makes the lightest, fluffiest cake with fabulous flavor! For future reference, I would chop the pecans for the frosting a bit smaller than chopped pecans come in the bag, but only to spread them around a little bit more within the frosting. I halved both recipes to spare us the temptation and made a single layer, frosted on top and sides. Easy despite the advanced skill label. Will definitely make again (and again and again)!
I have made this cake so many times for my family they love it and ask me to make it a lot!! So easy to make!!
I have been using this recipe for years and this cake is fabulous! The recipe is not at all complicated and definitely worth a try.
Is not complicated really, Is a exquisite cake!
I'm a big fan of Hershey's products and love to bake with them. This cake is excellent! One of the best recipes I've tried.
This is the best german chocolate cake. My family love it. This was the first time I made a german chocolate cake and it was so easy to.
This is a classic that I've made many times, it never fails to wow the crowd. Don't look for leftovers.
