Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup HERSHEY'S Cocoa
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk or sour milk
  • 1 cup strong black coffee OR 2 teaspoons powdered instant coffee plus 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

  • 1. Heat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour 12-cup fluted tube pan, two 9-inch round baking pans or one 13x9x2-inch baking pan.
  • 2. Stir together sugar, flour, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder and salt in large bowl. Add eggs, buttermilk, coffee, oil and vanilla; beat on medium speed of mixer 2 minutes (Batter will be thin). Pour batter evenly into prepared pan.
  • 3. Bake 50 to 55 minutes for fluted tube pan, 30 to 35 minutes for round pans, 35 to 40 minutes for rectangular pan or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes. Loosen cake from side of pan and remove from pans to wire racks. Cool completely. Frost as desired. Makes 12 servings.
  • * To sour milk: Use 1 tablespoon white vinegar plus milk to equal 1 cup.

    This recipe is so delicious. I used a recipe converter to increase the ingredients to 1 1/2. Also, I used unsalted butter and 2 tablespoons of sour cream in place of the oil. I am in heaven. Easy and tasty.

    I originally found this recipe on the back of the Hershey cocoa can. I cannot remember how long I have been making this wonderful moist cake recipe but it probably has been since the 1970"s. It is my go to birthday cake and it is the only one my children and grandchildren want. I have made it so many times I don't even need to look at the recipe!!!!! I always use (2) 9 inch pans.
    Excellent chocolate cake recipe---Easy, fast and wonderfully delicious. Cake roses very high and produced a deep, dark, dense and very moist cake. I added an orange vanilla buttercream frosting and the cake was divine. In a 13 by 9 inch glass pyrex pan, cake took almost 50 minutes to bake. Edges were as moist and tender as the center of the cake.

    The first time I used this recipe was on my sons's firts Birthday 38 years ago. It's the only cake he has ever wanted on his Chrismas Birthday and even when he is not home for Christmas, my family asks that I bring it.

    This has to be my all time favorite chocolate cake recipe. I have never had it fail, and I've never failed to have so many compliments. I had the original Hershey's cookbook from so many years ago and this was by far the most used recipe. 5 stars for sure.
    I love this cake and my clients love the taste but why is this cake shrinking so much when I take it out of the oven. Baked for 20 yrs, new oven spot on, fresh ingredients, weigh everything and so forth. HELP! it's actually my most requested cake but I can't keep baking extra layers to make a 4 inch cake.

    Hi, I am from Malaysia. I used this recipe and the result was excellent. got the thumbs up from my boys, roaring teenagers who love chocolate. I used this recipe to make mini cupcakes and they turned out awesome. By the way, I may reduce the baking soda from 2 tsp to 1 tsp in the future as I tasted a tad bit of the soda in the finished product. (I used soda bicarbonate) Will this reduction affect the outcome of the cake?

    The best! I used my favorite butterscotch toffee coffee, buttermilk and baked in a 13x9" rectangular glass pan. Frosted the cake with the "Perfectly" frosting recipe. It was a huge hit. I can't remember the last time I baked a cake from scratch, if ever!
    This cake is like no other. I have had people offer to pay me to make this cake for them. It is so moist and rich. This is a chocolate cake that is hard to beat. If you are a chocolate lover then I would recomend this making this for dessert tonight.

    This really IS the best chocolate cake ever! I've been searching for the perfect chocolate cake recipe for at least five years and I finally found it. It reminds me of the rich chocolate cakes of my childhood on the farm only better. I used the darkest cocoa I could find and Starbucks Via instant decaf Italian Roast. I frosted it with the Cocoa Fudge Frosting from the Hugs and Kisses cake recipe, a perfect match. My friends raved about it and I got an email from one saying that her husband ate a piece at 6:45 this morning and declared it, "The best chocolate cake I've ever had."

    Ive been using this cake recipe from Ina Gartens Barefoot Contessa show never knowing until today that its really a Hershey recipe. Im very disappointed in Ina Garten but I LOVE this cake.
    When I was a young child, my mother introduced this cake to our family and we never wanted any other kind of cake again. It's been many years and my mother is gone, but we keep baking this same cake and just like when we were kids, the new generations only want this cake, and I will always think of my mother when we devour it. It's the best ever!
    This is one of the best chocolate cakes ever!!! The coffee compliments the chocolate so well. Don't let the coffee scare you away, it gives the chocolate the best flavor. If you don't really like coffee try using a lighter blend of coffee and it won't even taste like coffee. If you do like coffee, try using a very dark blend of coffee, you will be able to taste it more. I also frosted it with a frosting from the mocha brownies on this website,(I doubled it), it has coffee liquor in it, which compliments the cake very well. Hope this helps!!

    This is my favorite chocolate cake recipe. I am a fan of chocolate and coffee together. Depending on the kind of coffee you can make the flavor delicate or bold. Anytime I crave chocolate this cake really hits the spot. I recommend buying a bag of frozen cherries and making a sauce to drizzle on top instead of frosting or as a filling.
    great recipe.! i made cupcakes with the batter too, and it was perfect, even without the icing. My mom loved it even if she isn't a fan of sweets. I like it sweet so the icing was a perfect match. :)
    This is The Best chocolate cake recipe Ever! I've been making it for nearly 30 years, since I was a little girl baking with my mom, and I LOVE IT! I use decaf coffee for guests, or hot water and cocoa for kids, which adds more chocolate flavor anyways. (Please don't skimp on the coffee quality, as you can taste the difference. Organic and Free Trade are best.) And everyone LOVES it and wants to know what it is. :) In trifles, with whipped cream frosting, regular frosting, chocolate ganache', ice cream middle, pastry cream middle, pudding; dressed up for parties or down, decorations or not... it's all great with this cake! :) Thanks Hershey's! You make me a happy woman. :) lol
