1 package HERSHEY'S Unsweetened Chocolate Baking Bar
3/4 cup butter or margarine
2 cups sugar
1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup nuts
1. Heat oven to 350°F. Grease 13x9x2-inch baking pan.
2. Place chocolate and butter in large microwave-safe bowl. Microwave at MEDIUM (50%) 1-1/2 to 2 minutes or until chocolate is melted and mixture is smooth when stirred. Add sugar; stir with spoon until well blended. Add eggs and vanilla; mix well. Add flour and nuts, if desired; stir until well blended. Spread in prepared pan.
3. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out almost clean. Cool completely in pan on wire rack. Frost brownies, if desired. Cut into squares. Makes about 24 brownies.
CHIPPY CHEWY BROWNIES: Prepare brownies as directed, stirring in 1 cup REESE'S Peanut Butter Chips with flour. Bake as directed.
CAKELIKE BROWNIES: Stir in 1/2 cup milk with eggs and vanilla. Increase flour to 1-1/2 cups. Bake as directed.
CREAM CHEESE BROWNIES: Prepare brownies as directed, using 4 eggs. Spread in prepared pan. Beat 8-oz. pkg. softened cream cheese, 1/3 cup sugar, 1 egg and 2 tablespoons flour. Soon mixture over brownie batter; swirl with knife to marble. Bake 35 to 40 minutes.
ROCKY ROAD BROWNIES: Prepare brownies as directed; bake 30 minutes. Immediately sprinkle with 2 cups miniature marshmallows, 1 cup HERSHEY'S SPECIAL DARK Chocolate Chips or HERSHEY'S Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips and 1 cup chopped nuts over brownies. Bake another 3 minutes or until topping melts together.
These are my mothers brownies. She added lots of pecans. They were so wonderful.
I have been making this brownie recipe for decades. Not only does it make a wonderful, fudgey brownie, but it makes up as fast as any pre-packaged mix (and tastes so much better with fresh ingredients). I always keep unsweetened baking bars in my pantry for brownie emergencies. One recipe feeds a crowd! As is, these brownies are superb. Add a simple fudge frosting and they are over the top out of this world. YUM!!!
The best brownies ever, and they are super easy to make. This is the recipe that used to be on the Hershey's baking chocolate box before they redesigned the packaging. Hints from making this recipe *MANY* times: Whack the chocolate with a wooden spoon or the dull edge of a chef's knife before unwrapping to break it into lots of little pieces before melting. Mix the butter and chocolate in a large glass bowl with a wooden spoon, so you can throw it back into the microwave (spoon and all) if it's not melted enough...saves cleanup of the spoon rest. If you want pretty looking brownies out of the pan (for bake sale, PTO, etc), line the 13x9 pan with two strips of aluminum foil then spray with cooking spray. After the brownies have cooled you can lift them out of the pan using the foil, and cut neatly.
