The word Valentine comes from Saint Valentine of Rome and Saint Valentine of Terni who were martyred on February 14th. There is speculation that these saints are the same because both are known for their compassionate and loving acts. It is said that Saint Valentine once signed a letter "From your Valentine" which is still a customary tradition.
During the Middle Ages, Europeans believed that birds chose their mates each year on February 14. Legend has it that Europeans began to emulate the ornithological practice.
While the facts are unknown, this holiday has formed to celebrate love and romance.
