Duct Tape Zebra Pumpkin

With an October 31st birthday, I would be remiss not to love Halloween. In fact, I think I love it even more as an adult (especially as a mother, seeing it through my children’s eyes) than I did as a child myself.

My 9-year-old daughter, 6-year-old son and I love decorating our NYC apartment for Halloween. We may not have a front porch or yard at our disposal, but inside our four walls we manage to make our home look very festive.

In this post, I want to share how to make our latest pumpkin creation. It’s very pretty and soooo easy. I’m no Martha Stewart, so I’m always on the lookout for deceptively easy ways to decorate beautiful pumpkins. Thanks to a Halloween decor magazine at the supermarket checkout (I apologize I can’t remember which one), this year we perfected our “Zebra Pumpkin.” Take a look:

Amazing, right? You, too, can make a gorgeous pumpkin that will fool your friends into thinking you are the best artist on earth, when in fact all you did was show some good taste in choosing a roll of tape.

Things You'll Need
  • Zebra Duct Tape
  • Scissors
  • Pumpkin (real or foam)
How to Make

    Starting at the top of the pumpkin just below the stem, carefully unroll the tape one strip at a time down the length of the pumpkin.

    Repeat one vertical strip next to the other (don’t worry if the strips start to “swerve” as you follow the contour of the pumpkin, but try to match up the pattern as best as you can). Flatten any air bubbles as you move along the pumpkin with the tape.

    Of course, while you are crafting you may want to snack, too – especially if you are crafting with a fourth grader who has a major sweet tooth. While R. and I made our zebra pumpkin, we each enjoyed CADBURY SCREME EGG Candy, a brand-new Halloween version of the popular Easter confection, this time with seasonally appropriate white-and-green fondant filling.

    I had received several from Walmart and they are just as delicious as the Easter version. We are trying not to eat them all right away. (R., age 9, quipped, “I know why they call they call them Screme Eggs. Because I screamed from happiness when I saw them!”)
