Family S'mores Costume

Creating themed family costumes is a great way to build memories and have fun together this Halloween season. They are perfect for a family Halloween party, church fall festivals, and for trick-or-treating.

As I tell you about how we came up with, and created our family costume, I wanted to share with you some tips that helped us along the way.

Things You'll Need

  • Cardboard sheets
  • Box cutter
  • Paint
  • Masking tape
  • Two white throw pillows
  • Safety pins
  • White strip of fabric or blanket binding

How to Make

    Find Your Inspiration

You can find inspiration all over: Pinterest, magazines, TV shows, etc. Take some time to figure out what your theme is for your costumes, or what you want your family costume to be.

When looking for ideas, make sure that you keep in mind what you’re good at. If you aren’t great at sewing, then a pattern for how to sew a Peter Pan costume is probably not a good idea. However, if you love to glue and put crafts together, then something that uses your talents would be a great idea. Don’t forget to take into consideration what event you will be wearing your costumes for and the possible weather conditions if you will be outside.

Our inspiration came from a cute S’mores family costume we saw last year on Pinterest. We loved the idea and knew it would fit our family perfectly. Neither my husband nor I are great at sewing. As a result, we stayed away from anything that would require more than a single needle and thread. However, my husband is good at creating different things from cardboard or wood. I knew that he would enjoy cutting up some boxes and making the our costumes.

Search Your Home for Available Materials

Some of the most creative costumes can come from items you have lying around the house. A colander and pipe cleaners can become the head of an alien. A T-shirt can become a Super Hero Cape. Be creative and let your imagination wander, but most importantly, have fun with it.

For our family costume, all we had to find were some boxes. Our costume is nothing fancy, but having the boxes lying around made it easy to begin the process of making the costume.

Head to the Store to Pick Up Any Needed Supplies

Once you’ve found the different items that you’ll be using from around the house, it’s time to start making a list of the materials you’ll need from the store.

Our costumes were simple enough that we didn’t need to buy many materials. As a family, we don’t like to spend money frivolously, and because of that, we decided to make our list and then go to Walmart together and make a fun event out of searching for supplies. None of the items we needed were hard to find.

Designate Jobs (Kid-Friendly and Adult Jobs)

Part of the fun of making a family costume is getting your kids to help. Doing so makes the costume-making a family affair.

For our costumes, we had both of our boys help us by painting the cardboard pieces that we had cut out. They actually did a great job without making a mess. All in all, it was a fun time.

    Relax and Have Fun

Your costume doesn’t have to be perfect by anyone else’s standard but yours! It’s supposed to be a great excuse to bond as a family. Use this time to have fun together as a family and create some great memories. If you are doing a family-themed costume, then it’s great to allow some of the costume to reflect the personality of the person wearing it (even if that means it might get a little messed up).

For our costume, our oldest wanted to be the HERSHEY’S Milk Chocolate Bar, and it made sense to allow our youngest to be a marshmallow. My husband and I were the natural choices for the graham crackers. This completed our S’mores costume.

Of course, no S’mores Costume is complete without a little S’mores Treat!
