Countdown to Halloween

Countdown to Halloween

Glowing pumpkins nestled in a spooky tree help countdown to Halloween. Don’t forget to take a treat from the witch’s hat!

Materials Needed:

  • 1 yard background fabric (ex. a blue and purple batik)
  • ½ yard fabric for witch’s hat (ex. a black dot)
  • 30½" X 15" quilt batting
  • 1 yard black fusible interfacing
  • 2/3 yard heavy white interfacing
  • Tree branch pattern
  • Pumpkin faces and numbers patterns
  • Ball point pen
  • Iron
  • Iron-on inkjet fabric sheets
  • Fabric markers
  • 60 small black snaps
  • Fabric glue
  • Needle and thread
  • Scissors
  • (2) 3/8" dowels
  • 4" X 18" fabric for hat band
  • 2½"X 2½"  casing fabric
  • White chalk
  • Black craft paint
  • Black double tassel

Directions:

  1. Cut 2 pieces of background fabric 33" X 15"
  2. Cut 1 piece of black dot fabric 18" X 15"
  3. Layer batting, with the 1st piece of batik, fold black dot in half and place at bottom
  4. With the 2nd piece of batik, mark point at bottom by measuring from bottom center to each side, 9" from bottom edge
  5. Use scissors to cut along marking
  6. Sew 1/4" seam around outside edge, leave top sides open 1" from seam (for dowel) and leave 4" opening at side for turning
  7. Turn and press with iron
  8. Use scissors to cut a 12" circle from black interfacing (a dinner plate will work for a pattern)
  9. Fold into eighths
  10. Use tree branch pattern as a guide and cut as you would for a paper snowflake (cut tree trunk from black interfacing
  11. Follow instructions for fusing interfacing, place and adhere tree to the background
  12. Rub chalk on the back of the tree face pattern, go over the lines with a ball point pen to transfer pattern to tree
  13. Use colored pencil to trace over lines and shade
  14. Print pumpkins (faces and numbers) on to iron-on ink jet fabric sheets
  15. Follow instructions to iron the pumpkin faces to heavy interfacing
  16. Hold up to light and position the numbered pumpkins on the opposite side of interfacing and iron in place
  17. Cut out pumpkins with scissors
  18. Color pumpkins with fabric markers
  19. Use fabric glue to glue the male end of snaps on each pumpkin stem
  20. Place pumpkins on tree and mark placement of each pumpkin with chalk
  21. Sew female side of snaps on each mark
