What are Antioxidants?

Antioxidants are chemicals that prevent the "oxidation" of other compounds. If left unchecked, oxidation can produce "free radical" molecules. These molecules can initiate chemical reactions that could damage your cells and DNA. Oxidation is a natural process, but it can be intensified by certain behaviors such as smoking, keeping a poor diet, exposure to sun (UV radiation), and even exercise.

Antioxidants typically reduce the level of these free radicals by acting as recipients of the extra oxygen, thus preventing oxidation and subsequent damage. One way to enhance our body's antioxidant defenses is to eat antioxidant-rich foods. Some plant-based foods including apples, onions, blueberries, cranberries, teas (green and black) and red wines are a natural source of antioxidants, with a higher antioxidant content than other foods.

Another natural source of antioxidants is the cocoa bean - and that's where HERSHEY'S Dark Chocolate comes in.
