Even before the Hershey Chocolate factory was completed, work was begun on a trolley system to connect the new town to nearby communities. Not only did the trolleys serve as a means of inexpensive transportation for workers, they also brought milk to the factory, an essential ingredient for milk chocolate.
At first, Hershey’s transit system connected to nearby Palmyra and was eventually extended to Lebanon. As the need for milk increased, the system was expanded further to included stations as far away as Elizabethtown in Lancaster County. The trolley service was discontinued in 1946.
